Wanted: The Perfect Pet

Wanted: The Perfect Pet  is a picture book and is written by Fiona Robertson. Henry really wanted a pet with personality that was better than his pet frogs. He then put advertisement on poles that could be sold for a dog. But then he saw something in the news paper “Wanted: The Perfect Pet”. Henry went on the hunt but with a really good disguise, he dressed as a dog. He then met a random dog, he fell in love playing catch, fetch, and chasing him around a tree. But then Henry realized that the dog didn’t act right so the thing took off his costume and it was a DUCK! Henry realized that the Duck might be the perfect duck because he didn’t stink, slobber, shed, like a dog did. One text to self connection I made was when I saw a duck at a lake and it was super calm. A text text was when I read a book called ugly duckling. The final connection I made was when I saw a video to stop killing animals. This is a example of text to media. All in all I would recommend this book to 8-12 year olds.

There

The book “There” is written and illustrated by Marie-Louise Fitzpatrick. I thought it was a good book because it was written really well and it also had really good illustrations. This book is about a boy who always wants to go “There” he goes to different places wondering if he will grow up and changes clothes “There”. One connection I made was a text to self, It was when I went on a roadtrip to Edmonton and I was wondering when I would get there. Another example of text to media is when I was scrolling instagram and I came across a add for books and audiobooks. One text to world connection I made was when Someone tamed a wild tiger because it was injured, I saw this on National geographic. All in all, I really enjoyed this book because It was complicated but it was easy to understand because of the pictures.

The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind

The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind is written by William Kamkwamba and illustrated by Elizabeth Zunon. This book is about a boy named Malawi and he creates a windmill out of bike parts and it makes electricity which pumps water to his mother’s garden. A good example of text to self is when we learned about Renewable energy. A text to text example is when I read a book about people inventing new ways to generate electricity. A good example of text to world was when people make windmills in different countries to create power. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I would recommend this book for 10-12 year olds.

After The Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again

“After The Fall: How Humpty Dumpty Got Back Up Again” is a amusing book written and illustrated by Dan Santat. It all starts with Humpty Dumpty scared of heights and he doesn’t want to go up the same wall so he builds a bird that he can fly in. He ends up overcoming his fear and climbing the wall, he gets to the top and realize how much he misses being with the birds. A few seconds later he hatches into a bird and flies off. I made lots of connections to this book, one of them was a text to text. This book reminded me of when I read about the Berlin wall because some people would try to climb it. Another connection I made was a text to self, it reminded me of 18 year olds moving out of their house because he changed to a bird and flew. The final connection I made was a text to world, it was when Trump said he would build a wall between Mexico and the U.S.A. All in all, I really enjoyed this book.

Wangari’s Trees of Peace: A True Story from Africa By Jeanette Winter

Wangari lived under a flock of trees. She helps her village by collecting food and water, she also does very good in school which earns her a scholarship to America. She comes back a few years later and notices that all the trees were cut down. Wangari was very sad because she thought that her town would turn into a desert. So her and her friends gathered to talk about it. A few days had passed and they are now planting as many trees as they can. They ended up growing lots of trees and bring back the village. One connection I made was I love being outside and playing I the trees. This book is for kids 11-14 because its a true story. Overall I really enjoyed this book.

Enemy Pie

Enemy Pie was written by Derek Munson and illustrated by Tara Calahan. Is about a little boy around 10 years old that was having an amazing summer but one day his enemy Jeremy Ross moved houses, right next to him. He did not like that because he was not invited to any of his birthdays and his friends were. He went to his dad and asked: “How do you get rid of an enemy?” His dad said “There’s only one way and that’s, Enemy Pie. but first, you have to play with him for the day while I make the pie.” So he played with his enemy Jeremy Ross for the entire day. When the pie was ready He didn’t want Jeremy to eat it because he was such a good friend. In the end, the pie was just another way to make new friends. One of the connections I made was playing with my friends on my street. In the book The kid plays with Jeremy on his street, this is a good example of a text to self. Another connection I made was when  I read my mom’s cooking book and there was a pie just like in the book, this is another example of text to text. The third connection I made was to the media. I was watching a show about friendship and not to judge a person by first appeal.

Sir Cumference + The Dragon of Pi: A Math Adventure

“Sir Cumference + The Dragon of Pi” is a math book written by Cindy Neuschwander and illustrated by Wayne Geehan. This book is about a dragon who had a stomach ache and Radius goes on a adventure. He adventures through the city and teaches his friends why to find the Circumference and Diameter. He then meets the dragon again measuring his tail but all the knights were surrounding them wanting the formula for the circumference. Radius saved his life because of pi and so they celebrated. I don’t think there’s a theme, the only one that I can think of is dedication because Radius tries to find out what the formula is and he never gives up. The author tries to create a book that has a bunch of random math terms and makes it fun for kids. This book is for kids that are +10 because if your younger you would not get it. All in all, I really enjoyed this book because it taught me that math could be turned into something fun.

Act of kindness #4 February 24th

Japanese student Soichiro has stayed at our house for about 7 days now and he’s about to leave this Thursday sadly. On Sunday I took him to metro town because I felt that I wanted to get something special so he can remember me. I got him a cool water bottle with Vancouver going down it. I think that made him feel good because he got something (gift) from me and because it was for free (for him). This made me feel good because his reaction was very good. He was super happy and then hugged me. Then we bused back.

Act of kindness #1 February 13

I was just waking up at 7:10 and I saw my dad outside grabbing the shovel. I quickly ran outside and asked him “Do you mind if I shovel the yard” “sure” he answered. I chose this because I know that my dad works super hard each day to put a meal on the table. This made me feel good doing an act of kindness because than I could let my dad eat breakfast. I think my dad felt happy because then he could relax and don’t have to be tired.
